The latest revelations of extravagant spending at Steven Joyce’s Super Ministry are just the tip of a very expensive iceberg, says Labour’s Economic Development spokesperson David Clark.
"New information shows the building comes kitted out with hair straighteners, while the reception desk cost $74,000 - as much as a late model BMW.
“This follows news that $140,000 was spent on a television screen. A lot of Kiwi households aspire to own a HD television, but few would believe that a $140,000 screen is a good use of the taxpayer dollar.
“It beggars belief that taxpayers are picking up the tab for the installation of personal grooming gadgets in a government department.
“Also revealed is a whopping $260,000 spent renovating a rooftop sundeck.
“This comes on top of confirmation the department spent $10,000 on pay television subscriptions last year.
“It shows just how wasteful National in Government has become.
“Steven Joyce’s attempts to distance himself from the spending are just not credible. He is a micro-managing minister who chooses the colour and layout of his glossy pamphlets.
“If he didn’t ask questions about the $5 million spent on a flashy foyer, he has lost touch with hard-working New Zealanders. If he did and still spent the money, he has lost his mind as well.
"To top it all off, the Minister approved extra spending on a ministerial plaque commemorating the opening of the Stout St headquarters.
“Thankfully that didn’t come gold-plated. It may well be the only thing that isn’t,” David Clark says.
