The Common Sense Plan for Christchurch released by The People’s Choice today is a welcome relief from the shallow debate about rates rises versus asset sales, Labour’s Christchurch MPs say.
"Local residents – who have spent weeks trawling through the consultation document for the long term plan – have been unable to find any clear alternatives. Now they have options in a coherent strategy," says Port Hills MP Ruth Dyson.
"We congratulate The People’s Choice for developing what is a sound financial consideration of how we can move forward as a city.
"They have done this without crippling rates increases or losing valuable dividends from our City Council-owned assets. This is a realistic and robust piece of work which I know will be welcomed by many.
"It prioritises the capital works programme and seeks a genuine partnership with Government over earthquake repair work. It now needs the commitment of the Prime Minister to deliver it.
"This work is an important contribution to the critical debate the people of Christchurch are having. There is now a week-and-a-half left before the submissions close.
"I urge all Cantabrians to read this alternative plan and submit their support to the Council," Ruth Dyson says.
