Burglaries on rise.

New figures put paid to the Government’s claim that crime levels are falling as burglaries are happening more and more often, says Labour’s Police Spokesperson Stuart Nash.

“Statistics New Zealand released the recorded crime victims’ statistics which show a steady increase in the category of unlawful entry with intent/burglary, break and enter.

“An overall increase of 11% to date for the 2015/2016 period is just unacceptable, this is 4608 more burglaries committed.

“If you compare the financial years of 2014/15 to 2015/16 to date there’s a steady increase for every month except September.

“These crimes are invasions of privacy and potentially life threatening. Every Kiwi deserves to feel safe in their own home.

“In 2015 more than 90 percent of burglaries weren’t resolved by Police who remain under-resourced and under further pressures.

“It’s time for Judith Collins and the National Government to front up and admit that they have underfunded our hardworking police men and women, and they are struggling as a result,” says Stuart Nash.
