Budget 2008: Modern Justice
Budget 2008 Budget invests in a stronger justice system to make sure New Zealander's live in safe communities. Funding includes more resources for the Police Force and investment in Auckland’s courts.

The Labour-led government is committed to a modern, effective and fair justice system where offenders are held accountable, victims of crime are supported, prisoners are rehabilitated, reoffending is reduced, and in turn, communities are strengthened.
Budget 2008 continues our investment in strong and fair justice for all, by providing:

More front line Police Officers and more funding for the Police Force. There is $180 million in new funding over four years, including $9.5 million for the third and final tranche of the extra 1000 sworn and 250 non-sworn police committed to in our confidence and supply agreement with NZ First.

The replacement of the antiquated Mt Eden Prison and the recruitment of an additional 89 Probation Officers. The new prison will provide enhanced security and allow for better rehabilitation programmes to reduce re-offending.

$6.3 million over two years fore a more streamlined and efficient court system in Auckland. This new investment of will help lay the groundwork for improving Court capacity and resources in our largest city.

$11.2 million in new operating funding for legal aid remuneration, with an accompanying review of innovative ways of developing the legal aid system.
A fair and safe society requires a cohesive approach across the justice sector. That’s why Budget 2008 enhances capability in policing, in the prison system, in courts, in the probation service, and in terms of legal aid provision and victims’ rights.
