Scrapping of bus pass penalises some seniors

Trevor Mallard

08.10.2008

Hutt South MP Trevor Mallard today attacked the scrapping of the senior citizens bus pass, which means older people in the Hutt Valley between the ages of 60 and 65 are facing price hikes on local buses.

"As of October 1 2008, senior citizens with a SuperGold Card holders (those aged 65 or over, and those under 65 receiving New Zealand Superannuation or a Veteran's Pension)  are able to travel for free on public transport during off peak hours, thanks to a government investment of $72 million over four years.

"However, NZ Bus has taken the opportunity to rip off some senior citizens by cutting concessions for those under 65.  The $5 senior citizens all day pass used on GO Wellington, Valley Flyer and Airport Flyer bus services has been withdrawn, forcing those in the 60-65 age bracket to pay an outrageous $12 for the same service.

"These seniors now suddenly have to pay $7 more for a STARPass so they can travel between the Hutt Valley and Wellington.

"This is a mean spirited decision and I am writing to the bus companies involved to voice my concern.  I urge them to reinstate the $5 senior citizens all day pass to allow all our elders to continue to move freely around our region.

"Free or cheap travel for senior citizens gives them the flexibility to travel between Wellington and the Hutt Valley, and to get out and about and contribute to our community.

"To take this away from some of them is out of line. This change has come without warning and without notification to those who use this service.

"Senior citizens are valued members of our community, and making it easer for them to get around is a big help. Bus companies should do the right thing," Trevor Mallard said.
