Dishonest National would widen gap between rich and poor

Finance Minister Michael Cullen today released data that shows the gap between rich and poor would widen significantly under the National Party's tax policy.

"The National Party didn't want you to notice, but their unfair tax plan will line the pockets of the very wealthy at the expense of poorer and middle income New Zealanders," Dr Cullen said today.

He showed that National's tax plan has bigger and bigger cuts going to the well-off and very little going to those on middle to low incomes and that it comes at the expense of KiwiSaver and Research and Development tax credits.

"The National Party deliberately stopped their table of tax cuts at the $100,000 salary band and now we know why. They were trying to hide the true scale of the benefits for the wealthy.

"The CEO of Telecom would receive around $500 extra a week under National's tax plan and it would be being paid for out of other people's savings," said Dr Cullen.
