Richmond school students to pick up a trade
10.10.2008
When school starts next February, hundreds of Richmond students will be picking up a trade from the new Youth Apprenticeships Scheme.
Labour MP Maryan Street says a local school has signed up to the project.
Waimea College will offer students a greater chance to study a trade.
The Youth Apprenticeship Scheme gives students the opportunity to build the key skills they need for a career in industry while they are at school. They can also pursue a Modern Apprenticeship.
"The Labour-led government wants to help all New Zealanders reach their full potential. Making school interesting and relevant to students and relevant to the career they intend to pursue is an important step towards this," Maryan Street said.
The Youth Apprenticeships Scheme is part of the Schools Plus programme. Schools Plus has received a $39.7 million investment from the government to ensure all young people are involved in structured learning until they reach the age of 18.
"Offering the Youth Apprenticeships Scheme in a Richmond school is a great opportunity for local young people who are interested in a trade. It means they can begin learning and practising the core skills they need while they are still at school."
