National puts Easter trading in the too hard basket

All Labour MPs will vote against National’s move to leave Easter trading laws up to councils, Labour’s Workplace Relations spokesperson Iain-Lees Galloway says.

“Despite this being a conscience vote, Labour MPs are united in their opposition to the Government’s moves to abrogate its duty to determine whether shops should be open over this holiday period.

“All councils that gave submissions on the Shop Trading Hours Amendment Bill were opposed to this law change. It will put extra costs and pressures on them.

“Like Pontius Pilate Michael Woodhouse has washed his hands of this issue. National has put Easter trading in the too hard basket.

“Sadly this is a trend for an increasingly arrogant Government who already sought to undermine the Easter trading restrictions by telling labour inspectors not to enforce the law.

“If the Government wants to change the law around Easter trading they should do that themselves,” Iain Lees-Galloway says.
