Key Government continues to fail on jobs front

Nearly 20,000 more Kiwis have been made unemployed over the past three months because of John Key’s lack of a plan to keep the economy moving, Labour Leader Phil Goff said today.

“Today’s news that the unemployment rate has risen sharply from 6% to 6.8% is a tragedy for those New Zealanders who have lost their jobs,” Phil Goff said.

“This is more evidence that the Government’s economic policies are failing. It is clear John Key’s smile and wave attitude is doing nothing to help Kiwis who face the daily reality of being unemployed.

“The rise in unemployment is well above what many economists predicted and paints the real picture of the struggle many Kiwi families are going through.

“Kiwis have had enough of the gimmicks like the Jobs Summit and cycleway. They want action from their Government to get them back into work.

“Unfortunately National’s inaction has meant prolonged uncertainty over the jobs market.”

Phil Goff said John Key’s Government has no plan to get the economy moving in the right direction.

“In May John Key said ‘what we do know is that the trend is going in the right direction - unemployment is falling’,” Phil Goff said.

“So what is the plan now?

“How many jobs will be created by hiking GST?

“Why at a time when unemployment is still on the rise is the Government making Kiwi workers even more vulnerable by extending its 90 day ‘fire at will’ laws to all companies?

“What happened to John Key’s plan to close the wage gap with Australia?

“The truth is there is no plan and nearly 20,000 more Kiwis felt the affect of that in the last three months.”
