Key kneecaps McCully on Rugby World Cup again

Murray McCully’s bungled handling of the Rugby World Cup has once again forced the Prime Minister to step in and try and clean up his mess, raising real questions about whether he’s up to the job, says Labour’s Auckland Issues spokesperson Phil Twyford.

“John Key was left no option but to intervene in the matter immediately following his return from Hawaii yesterday, after his Rugby World Cup Minister’s embarrassing gaffes.

“Murray McCully’s attempts to bully Aucklanders into a quick fix, second class Queens Wharf development at their own expense backfired badly,” Phil Twyford says.

“It follows the complete mismanagement of the Rugby World Cup broadcasting rights, which erupted into a nasty public spat as a result – and Murray McCully was right in the middle of it.

“John Key should be rethinking his decision to put Murray McCully in charge of such a significant event. The fact that the Prime Minister keeps intervening is in itself an admission he made a bad call giving him the job,” Phil Twyford says.

“It’s clear Murray McCully is too busy making overseas trips to give the Rugby World Cup the focus it requires. How many times is he going to be allowed to drop the ball before John Key acts?”

“He should do so now and give the job to Economic Development Minister Gerry Brownlee.”
