Labour applauds Scottish moves on tobacco

Labour Associate Health spokesperson Iain Lees-Galloway is applauding the Scottish Parliament for taking the bold step of ending the display of tobacco products in retail outlets.

“Clearly the Scottish government takes the health of its people seriously, unlike here in New Zealand,” said Iain Lees-Galloway.

“Governments around the world are taking this next logical step in the fight to reduce smoking rates. It’s time we caught up.”

Around 5000 New Zealanders die each year from smoking related diseases. Maori are particularly affected.

“Tariana Turia is the Minister responsible for Tobacco Control. Rather than allowing her Government to sit on the sidelines and reject recommendations to ban tobacco displays she should be demanding action from Health Minister Tony Ryall. A flag on the Harbour Bridge won’t save lives.”

Iain Lees-Galloway has drafted a private members bill to remove tobacco displays but it has yet to be drawn from the ballot.

“Of course I hope my bill gets drawn, but this issue shouldn’t be left the mercy of the ballot. If Tariana Turia and Tony Ryall have to be forced into action by an opposition member’s bill, that’s pathetic.
