Local stories on the airwaves at risk

Funding cuts forced upon Radio New Zealand may gravely affect the futures of New Zealand’s talented writers, scriptwriters and everyone involved in the production of New Zealand’s stories, arts spokesperson Steve Chadwick said.
“Radio New Zealand has already suffered a funding freeze in its modest budget, any further cuts demanded of them will begin to impact upon their ability to get those stories out, let alone keep up with ever changing technology”, Ms Chadwick said.
“Broadcasting Minister Jonathan Coleman feels New Zealand’s heritage can be left to the hands of the market – we have evidence enough that markets do not always deliver the best results for the people.
“The Government needs to both support New Zealand writers in their rates of pay and conditions and the right of all New Zealanders to hear their stories on air,” Steve Chadwick said.
