Maori Party selection a distraction
The most recent 'challenge' to the Maori Party nomination of its Hauraki-Waikato candidate further confirms that all is not well in the Maori Party ranks said MP for Hauraki-Waikato Nanaia Mahuta
"I understand that one of the two unsuccessful candidates has decided to challenge the process legally when the message should be get on with the job of telling the party leadership that they are headed in the wrong direction!
"I find it a side-show and would much rather debate with the Maori Party why they have supported National to introduce tax changes that will deliver very little or nothing to those 73% of the electorate earning $40,000 or less. Very soon Maaori whaanau will be feeling the pinch with increased GST of 15% and what is the Maori Party doing about it? Nothing.
"The latest debacle in the Hauraki-Waikato selection saga is further evidence that there are deeper problems bubbling in the Maori Party and there are disagreements about where the party leadership is going.
"A challenge to the selection process will only expose how involved the Maori Party leadership has been in selecting its preferred candidate. The whole thing is a mess and a distraction from the real issues.
"I'm focussed on the issues that make a difference to whaanau in the Hauraki-Waikato electorate, as soon as they make their mind up - I'm ready!
