National tries to divert attention from tax increase

The National Party is desperately attempting to divert attention away from its October GST increase, Labour Chief Whip Darren Hughes said.

“I understand National are very upset that Labour has released a pamphlet that highlights the increase in GST,” Darren Hughes said.

“Labour makes no apologies for highlighting an increase in basic goods and services, like power and food at a time when families are struggling.

“The figures are accurate and show the true extent of GST going to 15 percent. We know have one of the highest rates of consumption tax in the world.

"The leaflet points out what proportion of the cash a family is paying for their food and power is tax and how much is for the actual goods and services. By breaking their promise and pushing up GST, National has made sure people get less for their money and the figures in our leaflet accurately point that out.

“National is simply trying desperately to divert attention away from itself. National are on the wrong side of this issue, they are hitting families who cannot afford it with a substantial GST increase and Labour is simply pointing that out,” Darren Hughes said.
