Labour’s Canterbury MPs have written to Housing Minister Nick Smith to urge him to help save the Tenant Protection Agency.
“Nick Smith needs to cut the rhetoric and take a very practical step to supporting struggling Canterbury tenants,” Labour’s MP for Christchurch East MP and Associate Housing spokesperson Poto Williams says.
“The Tenant Protection Agency has found itself with a funding shortfall and risks having to close its doors.
“This will severely disadvantage those renters who need advice and support in the increasingly complex Canterbury rental market.
“The Agency has assisted thousands of people in the past year and it would be devastating for Cantabrians if they were forced to shut up shop.
“While the public has responded to a call for donations, more is needed.
“Labour urges the Minister to provide short-term funding to allow the service to continue until longer-term backing is secured.
"Nick Smith’s intervention can save this service. He must act now,” Poto Williams says.
