Huge progress at Mapua but not perfect

Damien O'Connor

29.07.2008

West Coast Tasman MP Damien O'Connor today welcomed the first report on the clean up at Mapua's contaminated site and said he will be ensuring the specific recommendations relating to the site cleanup are followed through.

Mr O'Connor was referring to the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment's report "Investigation into the remediation of the contaminated site at Mapua", which looked into the decontamination of the former Fruitgrowers Chemical Company plant at the Mapua Estuary near Nelson.

Mr O'Connor said the report is the first of three investigating the clean up of the Mapua site, which has been the most contaminated and most challenging site ever to be remediated in New Zealand.

"This report provides a good insight into what has been a huge issue for the Tasman area for some time now.  As local MP I have been keeping a close eye on this issue and will continue to do so, ensuring recommendations are followed once the two further reports are released," said Mr O'Connor.

A health report is expected in approximately two months, and the final auditor's report will follow.

"The government recognised that Mapua was both an environmental and health risk and committed a substantial amount of funding into cleaning up the area so we are not only looking out for the well-being of the environment, but we are also focusing on the health of our communities.

"It is pleasing to note that the Tasman District Council plans to allow both residential and recreational development on the land in the future and I look forward to this development being able to safely take place," said Mr O'Connor.
