Rebates waiting for a ratepayer home

Darren Hughes

09.06.2008

Horowhenua and Kapiti Coast ratepayers have until the end of June to apply for a rates rebate of up to $500.

Otaki MP Darren Hughes says people need to make applications before 30 June to be considered for a rates rebate for the current rating year.

"Locals can get up to $500 off the rates bill, if eligible, depending on household income," said Mr Hughes.

"It really is worth taking a few minutes to fill in the form. Ratepayers receiving NZ Super, or on a low income or a benefit, who haven't yet looked into rates rebates should ensure they apply before the deadline date".

"It's easy to start the ball rolling - just pop into the council offices or call them for an application form, or download one at www.ratesrebates.govt.nz."

The latest figures* show that $1,696,299 has been paid out to 3852 Horowhenua and Kapiti Coast households so far this rating year.

"This time last year, 4167 had been granted in our area, so with three weeks remaining for people to make their needs known, I'm encouraging as many as possible to apply," said Mr Hughes.

Up to $70 million has been allocated for the Rates Rebate scheme for the current rating year. Eligibility depends on a combination of income and rates levels, along with the number of dependants.

Budget 08 future-proofed the scheme, ensuring that the rebate and income eligibility will be amended to reflect inflation levels. The new maximum for the next rating year will be $530.

"Through initiatives like KiwiSaver, Working for Families and Rates Rebates, the government is helping families, young and old, in Horowhenua and the Kapiti Coast," said Mr Hughes.
