Budget boost for 150 Statistics field workers
10.06.2008
Statistics Minister Darren Hughes today announced Budget funding of $4.5m over four years to enhance the statistical capability of Statistics New Zealand, and, in particular, the field collection workforce.
"Budget 2008 includes funding to bring field collectors into the core public service so these workers will no longer be classified as temporary staff. This is an important and timely recognition of their contribution to the collection of high-quality statistics", said Mr Hughes.
"Each week, field collectors are on door steps and telephones listening to members of the community about life in New Zealand. These engagements build the statistics we need to make decisions about the country we live in".
"This Budget initiative illustrates this Labour-led government's ongoing commitment to strengthening the public service".
A further $560,000 has been allocated in 2008/09 to provide technological support to the field collection workforce.
A Best Practice Field Collections Project has also been established to review the way in which field collection operations need to be designed and managed over the next decade.
"New Zealanders can be assured that the future information needs of our country are in good hands", said Mr Hughes.
