Seven southern North Island councils awarded funding for innovative local youth projects
20.06.2008
Otaki MP Darren Hughes is congratulating seven local councils who have been granted government funding for innovative projects that will benefit local young people.
"I'm delighted to congratulate Horowhenua, Hutt, Napier, Porirua, Ruapehu, Upper Hutt and Wanganui District and City Councils whose projects are among those to be granted funding through the Ministry of Youth Development's Youth Development Partnership Fund," says Darren Hughes.
"The funding is a signal that the Government is committed to developing youth in ways that are meaningful and relevant to the young people themselves."
Horowhenua District Council will receive $65,000 for the A Youth Voice in Horowhenua project which aims to give Horowhenua youth a voice and a sense of belonging in their community.
Hutt City Council will receive $85,000 for the Nga Ara Kete project which will involve a team of four youth workers who will provide activities, engage at risk young people, develop leadership, support and mentor young people.
Napier City Council will receive $58,000 for the Ka Hao Te Rangatahi project which is a kaupapa Maori based initiative and targets a group of Maori males from Maraenui aged between 12 and 17 years who are exhibiting violent behaviour and who potentially could be recruited into local gangs.
Porirua City Council will receive $200,000 for the PCC After Hours Youth Support project which is aimed at building the capacity of relevant youth providers and projects.
Ruapehu District Council will receive $98,000 for the Making Connections, Building Strengths, Developing Skills (CBD Taumarunui project which continues the established Youth Forum to identify, plan and deliver projects to raise the profile of youth, develop youth skills, enterprise and employment, and link youth with local businesses and or training agencies.
Upper Hutt City Council will receive $36,975 for the Upper Hutt Talent Bank project which aims to provide guidance for youth to follow through with constructive business ideas, promote positive youth role models in the community and build relationships between young people and the business sector.
Wanganui District Council will receive $25,000 for the Underground project which seeks to place the development and delivery of projects and events designed to meet the needs of young people in Wanganui within the youth community.
The Youth Development Partnership Fund provides an opportunity for the Ministry of Youth Development, territorial authorities and young people to work together to provide new and innovative local youth development projects
