Hughes hails Transmission Gully announcement
24.06.2008
The future of economic development for Kapiti and Horowhenua has taken a huge step forward with the release of the investigations into Transmission Gully, says Otaki MP Darren Hughes.
"It's a welcome breakthrough - this green light means we are closer to construction than ever before".
Transport Minister Annette King has announced the results of the geotechnical planning, which show a cheaper, safer highway option can be constructed.
"The Government promised to do a thorough job and there is a concrete plan in place. Now our region has to work out how we can play a role in writing transport history with this new highway", said Mr Hughes.
"The National Party has criticised the geotechnical phase as ‘just another report'. Yet these findings have saved $275 million. I'm alarmed at National's dismissive approach to major policy issues like this".
"Transmission Gully has many loyal followers locally because it is the most sensible roading solution for the wider region. Taken together with public transport improvements, the infrastructure future is looking bright".
"Kapiti Coasters have waited a long time to hear the words that Transmission Gully can be built".
"The region has previously agreed that this is our number one priority so it's up to all of us to work out a way to fund the gap now that we know that the road can be built".
