Council needs to clean up graffiti in Browns Road, Manurewa

Manukau City Council needs to take all possible steps to remove unsightly graffiti from a block of retail shops in Browns Road, according to Manurewa MP Hon George Hawkins.

"The block of shops at 235 Browns Road is in a absolutely appalling state.  The entire complex is riddled with graffiti.  It appears that little if any attempt has been made to remove the graffiti, despite complaints from neighbours.

"I am calling on the Council to take steps now to remove the graffiti.  Earlier this year Parliament passed the Council's anti-graffiti law, which I sponsored on its behalf.  Ratepayers already pay over $1 million a year to fund the activities of the Beautification Trust.  I can see no good reason why the graffiti remains untouched at the Browns Road property," George Hawkins said.

Earlier this week Mr Hawkins took photos of the graffiti to catalogue the state of the vandalism.

"I am pleased that Manurewa councillor Daniel Newman has taken and provided to the Council signed statements from local residents, which highlight this wanton vandalism.  Having now received statements that detail visual pollution and the damage to the environment caused graffiti, the Council has no reason to delay acting in response to this ugly blight on our community," George Hawkins said.
