Don't rain on the vets' parade
22.08.2005
Minister saddened by grandstanding around VJ Day commemoration.
Contrary to claims reported by some media outlets, opposition politicians including party leaders and veterans' spokespeople - were invited to yesterdays function for veterans commemorating the end of World War Two," said Mr Hawkins.
It's a pity those criticising the arrangements didn't check more carefully to see if they actually received an invite, before besmirching what was a special event for many veterans.
Officials emailed the invite to each parties leader and veterans affairs spokesperson. Where there was no response, a follow-up phone call was made.
In the case of New Zealand First, which has raised concerns about the invitations, an e-mail invitation was sent to the office of the leader, and directly to the veterans affairs spokesman. A follow up call was made to New Zealand First leader, Winston Peters' office.
Yesterdays events were a wonderful occasion. The petty-minded grandstanding by some politicians makes a sad end to what was a special event, Mr Hawkins said.
