Labour's Manurewa MP George Hawkins said today that "the violence over the last week is the worse that Manurewa has known over 25 years.   He has appealed to residence to band together to ensure the violence stops.   People should offer the Police whatever help they can because what we are witnessing is a community problem and the whole community suffers with such violence.

Unfortunately, the problems with graffiti and uncontrolled children has been going on for years and Police must start foot patrols around Manurewa.   Many of the graffiti vandals are well known to the Police.   The Bill that I have in Parliament called the Manukau City Council (Control of Graffiti) Amendment Bill will get its Committee stages passed in February.

More Youth Workers are needed and I will be making submissions to the Government on this.  I will be sitting down with the Minister of Justice next week to ensure Manurewa is given close attention when it comes to people working with youth".

Mr Hawkins said the community recognised that respect and personal responsibility started in the home.  But the community needs more support from the Police and the Courts.

"Parents need to know and care about where their children are and what they are doing.  Residents who witness a crime taking place should phone the Police.  But the whole process won't work unless residents who take responsibility and do the right thing receive the support from the Police in the form of a prompt response to reported crime.  And the Police need greater support from the judiciary in the form of sentences that adequately punish criminal offenders," Mr Hawkins said.
