Labour government delivers in all weather

01.04.2008

Long-term plans, not knee-jerk reactions

The Labour-led government's stewardship in uncertain economic times can be trusted, as it is based on long-term plans rather than knee-jerk reactions or promises, said Judith Tizard today.

During buoyant economic times last year the government didn’t respond to populist calls for tax cuts.  We wisely kept investing in our infrastructure, and now, when international economies are being buffered, we are able to still keep delivering for New Zealand businesses, families and communities, said the MP for Auckland Central.

In contrast in April 1999, during similar uncertain economic times, the National government slashed superannuitant benefits.

April 1 is a milestone in that we celebrate one year since the introduction of 4 weeks annual leave for all Kiwis.

Within the business environment 1 April is significant as business tax reduces to 30cents in the dollar, tax credits associated with employers contributions to Kiwisaver begin, and a 15 per cent tax credit for Research and Development in the private sector starts.

For workers and families the milestone of 1 April represents consumer price index adjustments for superannuation and student allowances, and increases in working for families childcare subsidies. It also marks the 9th increase in the minimum wage since the Labour-led government took office, bringing the lowest legal pay rate to $12 hour.

The removal of the cap on charitable donations also takes effect from 1 April.

Finally, 1 April marks the date when the 500,000th person joined Kiwisaver.  The success of the Kiwisaver uptake reflects New Zealanders’ awareness of the benefits of long-term planning.

The Labour-led government continues to plan for all weather in our society and in our economy.
