MP to locals: make your views on local governance known

17.04.2008

Judith Tizard urges Aucklanders to make a submission on the Royal Commission on Auckland Governance.

Judith Tizard, MP for Auckland Central, is urging Aucklanders to make a submission on the Royal Commission on Auckland Governance before the deadline next Tuesday.

“If you have a view on how Auckland ought to be governed please make it known” said the local MP.

“We have seen a wide range of proposals from various local governing bodies, many of which have serious implications for all Aucklanders and for groups such as community boards.

“How local and regional do we want our local government to be? Do we want community boards scrapped and replaced with one neighbourhood councillor for 60,000 people? Do we want a Greater Auckland Council with an Auckland Mayor and four Deputy Mayors?

“What measures should we use to judge whether Auckland is getting the level of investment in services it needs to contribute to New Zealand’s growing prosperity?

“What air and water quality measures should we aim for and what level of congestion can we tolerate before raising our investment in roading and public transport?

“These are big questions for Auckland and the Royal Commission needs to hear your views,” said Judith Tizard.

The Royal Commission’s website tells us that written submissions will be accepted until 4 p.m. on 22 April 2008. Submitters are asked to send their submissions via the Royal Commission’s website (www.royalcommission.govt.nz). Submissions can also be mailed to:
