Bright sparks should consider a trade, says MP

Lynne Pillay

05.02.2007

Local school leavers considering their future are being urged by Waitakere MP Lynne Pillay to consider taking up a trade.

"I’m a huge supporter of young people seeking tertiary education, whether it's at university or polytech level or trades-based. And for those who lean towards practical rather than academic skills –West Auckland needs you!

"West Auckland needs on-the-job-trained plumbers, printers and electricians, just as much as it needs dentists, doctors and lawyers," said Lynne Pillay.

“I urge local school leavers and young people to seriously consider taking up a trade, where they can earn a good wage while they learn. They'll end up with a well-respected qualification and no student loan debt."

The MP says trades training has proven to be hugely popular with local young people. In the year to September 2006, West Auckland* had 238 Modern Apprentices and 1,683 Industry Trainees.

“Local bright sparks are earning good money, not having to rack up a student loan debt, and making an important contribution to the regional economy and community,” Lynne Pillay said.

"Sustainability for our regional economy depends on people taking up a broad range of job opportunities, and our Labour-led government wants to help New Zealanders achieve their potential through acquiring useful skills and good qualifications."

Trade training has proven popular nationwide. In September, there were 9,355 Modern Apprentices and 125,204 Industry Trainees. This represents a 13 per cent increase in Modern Apprenticeships and eight per cent increase in Industry Training on the previous year.
