Ranges Bill one step away

Lynne Pillay

14.03.2008

Long term protection for the Waitakere Ranges came one huge step closer when the Waitakere Ranges Heritage Area Bill passed through the Committee stage

Long term protection for the Waitakere Ranges came one huge step closer on Wednesday 12 March when the Waitakere Ranges Heritage Area Bill passed through the Committee stage.

The next and final step will be the Third reading which is set down for Wednesday the 2nd of April.

“This is the culmination of so much passion, commitment and sheer hard work by so many people within Waitakere and the greater community” said Lynne Pillay MP for Waitakere.  “Waitakere City, Rodney District and Auckland Regional Council have consulted widely and achieved tremendous support for the Bill both locally and nationally.”

The Bill was supported by Labour Members, the Green Party, Maori Party and Progressive Party and Taito Philip Field which gave a majority in the House.

The National Party opposed the Bill and clearly missed the plot on the importance of preservation of the Waitakere Ranges for now and generations to come.  The National Party has pledged that they will repeal the Bill if they become Government.

“This is another of the National Party’s gone by lunch time approaches and is yet another example of their lack of vision for our future” said Lynne Pillay.

Lynne Pillay and fellow West Auckland MPs David Cunliffe and Chris Carter are strong advocates and know they are representing the wishes of the vast majority of West Aucklanders.
