West Auckland kindergartens win environmental grant

Lynne Pillay

17.11.2006

Two enterprising West Auckland kindergartens have won funding for environmental projects.

Laingholm Kindergarten and Redhills Community Kindergarten are to receive a New Zealand Glass Environmental Fund grant of $703 for a worm farm at Laingholm and a gardening project at Redhills.

Announcing the local funding, Waitakere MP Lynne Pillay says she was delighted to hear the two kindies had been chosen.

"They deserve congratulations — they've done everything right, with strong environmental values, lots of student involvement, and involving the community," said Lynne Pillay.

"It's fantastic to see students developing an innovative and interesting project, and I'd like to encourage other schools to come up with their own creative ideas to help preserve our environment."

The local project is one of seventeen around the country announced today by Associate Environment Minister Nanaia Mahuta, receiving grants, ranging from $350 to $5000 for projects promoting environmental awareness and sustainability in their schools and communities.

Sponsored by glass manufacturer O-I New Zealand, the fund offers $25,000 in grants to promote better understanding of the importance and the fragility of the environment, with teachers and students encouraged to work with agencies such as local councils, the Department of Conservation, Forest and Bird, parents, and MPs.
