A Glen Innes community group is getting government funding to help prevent family violence.

Ka Mau te Wero is getting $30,000 over two years to help the community-based Whakapapa Mauri Ora workshops at Ruapotaka Marae, using visual and audio tools at the Glen Innes Community Markets to challenge apathy and change behaviours and attitudes to family violence. Programmes will also be made for local radio on changing behaviours and attitudes to violence.

Maungakiekie MP Mark Gosche says the local project is one of 33 nationwide announced last week [Eds: 15 June] by Social Development Minister David Benson-Pope.

Other projects across Auckland include $23,500 for Auckland Somali Community Association for a Somali language TV series on Triangle TV, and $10,000 for the Chinese New Settlers Trust to develop a family violence prevention strategy for Chinese communities.

The funding through the government's Community Action Fund aims to create Community solutions to prevent family violence – solutions that reflect the commitment, knowledge, skills and creativity of local people. The nationwide campaign includes mass media advertising, partnerships with charities, non-government organisations and businesses large and small.

"Preventing family violence requires a nationwide commitment now and into the future, so it's vital for the government to get broad community buy-in to a range of answers," said Mark Gosche.

Mark Gosche is calling for more Auckland groups to apply for funding. The next funding round opens today [18 June] and closes on 31 July, and more rounds will occur over the next four years. Application forms and information are available at MPs' electorate offices and the Family and Community Services website www.familyservices.govt.nz.
