Gosche opposes Auckland International Airport to foreign owners
10.08.2007
"The proposals to sell a controlling share in Auckland International Airport to foreign owners is one that should be opposed by all Auckland City Councillors because of the strategic importance of this asset" said Maungakiekie MP Mark Gosche.
The proposals to sell a controlling share in Auckland International Airport to foreign owners is one that should be opposed by all Auckland City Councillors because of the strategic importance of this asset said Maungakiekie MP Mark Gosche.
I applaud the position taken by Manukau City Council Mayor Sir Barry Curtis who rightly points out the dangers of such a sale to not only the economy of the Auckland region but to New Zealand.
Auckland City Council is currently calling for public submissions concerning the sale of its shares in the Airport company and I encourage all ratepayers in the area to let their councillors know that they should hold on to these very valuable shares and ensure local control over the most important airport in the country.
For years I have heard complaints from airlines about the landing charges, and the focus the airport company has had on its retailing activities and these matters need to be considered because at least at the moment the airport has local ownership, and local control.
The previous Auckland City Council sold half the shares for a very low price only to see them increase in value threefold. They are a good revenue earner for Auckland City and should not be hocked off for short term gain.
Aucklanders need to rise up and tell their council representatives to oppose the privatisation of their valuable shareholding to foreign owners Mark Gosche concluded.
