A Green Lane early childhood education (ECE) centre has been awarded a government grant of $20,000.

Maungakiekie MP Mark Gosche says Aro Arataki-The Way Forward is getting the money to help buy equipment for their extended centre adjacent to the Greenlane Clinical Centre facing Cornwall Park.

“This funding will help the centre to set up the learning environment with quality equipment and resources prior to extending its services to more children,” said Mark Gosche.

“Research shows that intensive and regular participation in early childhood education improves long-term educational outcomes for children.”

“The government wants more of our youngsters to get the start they deserve, by helping local communities establish their own early childhood services.”

The grant was made under the early childhood education Establishment Funding programme, which helps community groups meet the operational and equipment costs associated with establishing a licensed ECE service, or to increase the number of child places in their service.

The grants are part of the government’s ten-year strategic plan for early childhood education, Pathways to the Future: Ngā Huarahi Arataki.

In the 2007-08 financial year, $1.2 million is available for ECE services nearing licensing. The Aro Arataki - The Way Forward grant is one of twenty across the country for the second round of 2007-08 announced this week by Education Minister Chris Carter, worth a total $485,006.

Applications for the third round of Establishment Funding grants for 2007-08 close on 31 January 2008.
