Pushing P out of Auckland

This week the government's fight against crime receives a $39 million budget boost aimed at gangs and the producers of methamphetamine.

Maungakiekie MP Mark Gosche, welcoming the budget allocation, says this extra money will keep the pressure on manufacturers and suppliers of methamphetamine and builds on earlier government actions such as reclassifying 'P' as a Class A drug with a penalty of up to life imprisonment.

The Budget money cracks down on drug manufacturers, giving Police a third 'clan lab' team, more intelligence officers, and more forensic analysts to help resolve prosecutions.

The Police's National Interception Centre – the key weapon in combating gang involvement in the drug trade – also gets more staff and surveillance equipment.

"Tackling the methamphetamine trade and organised crime is a top priority to protect families and building safer communities.

"Auckland City Police district currently has a team of around 684 sworn officers and a crime resolution rate for drugs and anti-social offences of 90.7 per cent," says Mark Gosche.

The current national Police budget stands at a record of over $1 billion, combined with record police staff numbers of around 7,400 officers nationwide.

Mark Gosche says that the Budget boost to combat P, together with the help of the public and other community agencies, will help make Auckland safer for everyone.
