More firefighters great news for Hamilton

Hamilton’s nine extra career firefighters will improve the region’s fire fighting capability, Internal Affairs Minister Rick Barker and Hamilton West MP Martin Gallagher said today.

“Martin Gallagher has lobbied me intensively about the need for additional firefighters in Hamilton and it’s pleasing to see this delivered,” said Rick Barker.

“In May I spoke to Waikato firefighters about the proposed reforms to fire and rescue services, and the potential to for firefighters to take on a wider rescue and civil defence mandate. The appointment of these additional staff could help this become a reality," said Rick Barker.

Martin Gallagher said it was great that Hamilton was one of the first centres to benefit from what is the first increase in career firefighters since 1987.

“The economic success of Hamilton since the election of the Labour-led Government has led to strong population growth and this is reflected in the appointment of extra career firefighters,” said Martin Gallagher.

“Hamilton has fantastic firefighters and the additional appointments will not only ensure quick response times, but will allow more resources to be devoted to public education and other activities which can prevent fires from occurring in the first place,” said Martin Gallagher.
