More than twenty elite Hamilton athletes are among the successful North Island based recipients of Prime Minister's athlete scholarships, Hamilton West MP Martin Gallagher announced today.
The athletes are amongst a group of more than 650 nationwide who have been offered a Prime Minister's Athlete Scholarship this year, allowing them to pursue their studies, as well as reach their sporting goals.
"Sport plays a fundamental role in our national identity, which is why the Labour-led government is committed to supporting our elite athletes, as well as investing in the health and well-being of all New Zealanders," Martin Gallagher said.
"Providing athletes with the opportunity to gain a tertiary or vocational qualification while they compete allows them to maintain a healthy balance in their lives, and ensures they have career options after sport.
"With many of these elite athletes going on to represent New Zealand in their chosen sport, it is important that we support them to undertake study so they can concentrate on achieving their sporting goals without the added pressure of having a job."
Netballer Laura Langman is one of the Hamilton scholarship recipients. Laura is completing a Bachelor of Business Analysis, majoring in Accounting, at the University of Waikato.
She is also a member of the Silver Ferns and hopes to win gold at the World Championships in November this year.
Also receiving a scholarship is David Klinkhamer. David is has been a member of the Wheelblacks Team since 2006 and hopes to win gold at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
David aims to gain a degree in Sport and Exercise Science and is currently studying at the Waikato Institute of Technology.
The scholarships are administered by Sport and Recreation New Zealand (SPARC) through the New Zealand Academy of Sport, SPARC's high performance network.
