Nelson Bays Area police deserve praise

Maryan Street

01.10.2008

Labour MP Maryan Street has congratulated Nelson Bays police for increasing the number of cases being resolved in the area.

Her comments follow the release of the annual crime statistics for the financial year to June 30, which show Nelson Bays police increased the local crime resolution rate from 52 per cent to 56 per cent.

"I'd like to congratulate our police for their efforts in stepping up offence resolution rates and encourage the public to be supportive of the work they are doing.  Policing is not an easy job and it's important to acknowledge the work they put into ensuring our communities are safer places to live," the list MP working in the Nelson region said.

The statistics show Nelson Bays experienced a 0.4 per cent increase in recorded crime  - with recorded offences up 31 from 8417 to 8448.

The most significant increase in offences was for violence offences - up 25 per cent  - and this was driven almost entirely by an increase in recorded family violence.

"This isn't surprising given the increased exposure to family violence through campaigns such as  'It's Not OK' run by the government.  The police have also stepped up their focus on family violence and deserve considerable credit for doing so."

All frontline police have now undertaken family violence training and I'm sure this will have helped improve the level of trust victims of violence now have in the police ability to respond to their situation," Maryan Street said.

"We need to recognise that family violence is a significant issue in Nelson Bays and that our families and communities need to continue to work hard to reduce these tragic incidents, which are a blight on our community."
