Venue: University of Otago, Dunedin Date/time: 3:30pm, Saturday 30th August 2008 It's my pleasure to be here today at this cross-cultural seminar on social supports for developmental disabilities. I'd like to thank the Japan Society for funding the seminar and the travel of the Japanese participants, and I'd like to welcome the Japanese delegates to New Zealand.

This year has been an important one for disability issues, not just in New Zealand, but worldwide. In May a commemorative event at United Nations headquarters in New York celebrated "the entry into force" of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
