‘Pacific Strategy Welcomed by Pacific MP’
Labour MP Su'a William Sio says that Foreign Affairs Ministers and High Chief Vaovasamanaia Rt Hon. Winston Peters has got it right by placing the Pacific region as priority when he launched the ‘NZ Aid Pacific Strategy 2007-2015' today.
"As the holder of the Samoan chiefly title Vaovasamanaia, it is even more appropriate for the Rt Hon Winston Peters to issue the challenge to the leaders of the Pacific region to lift their standards of governance and to place national interests ahead of any personal interests."
"I am personally in full support of the four pillars outlined in the strategy and agree with the Foreign Affairs Minister that governance, economic growth, health & education, and building resilient communities are extremely important areas for the people of the Pacific island nations."
"I agree that poverty anywhere in the Pacific region will threaten the wealth we create, and will impact detrimentally on New Zealand in the years to come"
"I fully endorse that New Zealand's place is as a nation of the Pacific, and that we have a corresponding commitment to helping our neighbours enjoy a more prosperous future. New Zealand has a very special relationship with the Pacific on various levels including historical links, family connection, sports, business, arts & culture."
"I agree with the Foreign Affairs Minister that the more successful the Pacific is, the better it is for New Zealand."
