Lianne Dalziel completed a law degree (Canterbury University) and was admitted to the bar in 1984. She worked in the trade union movement before entering Parliament in1990 as a Labour Party MP. Lianne represented the seat of Christchurch Central from 1990-96; Labour List MP 1996-99; MP for Christchurch East since 1999. Lianne held a number of shadow roles for the Labour Party in opposition and served on a range of select committees.
Lianne was appointed to the Cabinet during the Labour-led government 1999-2008, holding a variety of portfolios: Immigration, Senior Citizens, ACC, Disability Issues, Women’s Affairs, & Small Business and associate roles in Justice and Education. Immediately prior to the 2008 general election Lianne was the Minister of Commerce, the Minister for Food Safety and an Associate Minister of Justice.
The eastern suburbs of Christchurch that make up the electorate Lianne represents have suffered a lot of damage as a result of the two earthquakes that struck Christchurch in September 2010 and February 2011, which means the focus of her recent work has been providing earthquake related information to and advocacy on behalf of her constituents.
