“Labour is petitioning the Government to allow National Party MPs to have a free vote over Easter shop trading legislation, says Pacific Island Affairs spokesperson Su’a William Sio.
“The Bill which allows shop trading on Easter Sundays has just had its second reading.
“While the Bill gives people the chance to opt out, the problem is that many are unable to refuse work through financial or employer pressure.
“The petition, which will be launched this weekend, is close to the hearts of Pacific people who see Easter as one of the key dates in the Pacific and Christian calendar.
“Many National Party members have misgivings over Easter Sunday’s special nature being eroded and I hope they are given the right to vote freely,” says Su’a William Sio.
