Gallagher Elected Chair of Foreign Affairs Defence and Trade Select Committee

21.02.2008

Hamilton West MP Martin Gallagher has today been appointed to Chair the Foreign Affairs Defence and Trade Select Committee. Along with Finance and Expenditure, this committee is regarded as being one of the senior select committees in the parliament.

Mr Gallagher replaces Hamilton based MP Dianne Yates who recently retired as chair. Mr Gallagher paid tribute to Dianne as a hardworking and very competent Chair of the committee. Mr Gallagher said “I am looking forward to this new parliamentary role particularly with regard to issues around overseas trade. This is vitally important to the Waikato given the huge contribution we as a region make to New Zealand’s exports, particularly with regard to dairy products”. Mr Gallagher said he anticipated working very closely with Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters as well as Phil Goff, who is Minister of both Overseas Trade and Defence. Mr Gallagher will be relinquishing his role as Law and Order Chair within the next two weeks.  He will however remain as a member for the immediate future.  Mr Gallagher noted that the Law and Order Select Committee was considering bills concerning the problems of graffiti and Policing, and will potentially consider changes to the Sale of Liquor Act aimed at tightening up on underage drinking.  “I have had a very active involvement in all these issues and wish to continue to make contributions to the Law and Order committee, especially in these critical areas”.
