MP Counsels Rates Rebate Claims

Lynne Pillay

West Auckland people can still apply for a rates rebate of up to $500 for this rating year

West Auckland people can still apply for a rates rebate of up to $500 for this rating year.

Waitakere MP Lynne Pillay says applications for a rates rebate for the 2006/07 rating year can be made up until 30 June.

"You can get up to $500 off your rates bill if you're eligible, depending on household income. It really is worth taking a few minutes to fill in the form," said Lynne Pillay.

"If you're a ratepayer and you're getting NZ Super, or you're on a low income or a benefit and haven't yet looked into rates rebates, you still can.

"It's easy to start the ball rolling – just get an application form from the council offices, or from www.ratesrebates.govt.nz."

The latest figures show that around $1.76 million has already been paid out to West Auckland* households since the expanded scheme came into effect on 1 July 2006 ($9.2 million across the Auckland region). The average rebate per household across the country is now $448.

Up to $70 million has been allocated for the Rates Rebate scheme for the 2007/08 rating year, but Ms Pillay says there is still money in this year's kitty.

Eligibility depends on a combination of income and rates levels, along with the number of dependents. For example, a married couple on NZ Superannuation of $24,456 and paying annual rates of $1,746 or more would be entitled to $500. A married couple on NZ Superannuation of $24,456 and paying annual rates of $1,300 would be entitled to a $203 rebate.

"Through initiatives like KiwiSaver, Working for Families and Rates Rebates, the government is helping families, young and old, in West Auckland and other communities across the country."

* Eds: as at 11 June 2007, the exact figure is $1,756,358, and applies to homes in the areas covered by Waitakere council.
