Project 300 short on facts

A Minister’s pet scheme to employ 300 disabled people in Christchurch seems to be short on facts, says Labour’s Disability Issues spokesperson Poto Williams.

“Nicky Wagner cannot provide solid evidence to show that her much vaunted Project 300 has actually helped disabled people into employment.

“Nicky Wagner cannot provide solid evidence to show that her much vaunted Project 300 has actually helped disabled people into employment.

“In a Select Committee hearing this week the Minister repeatedly could not say how many of the 505 people employed on the project are actually disabled.

“Talking Project 300 up to the country and to the United Nations is no substitute for some hard facts.

“It’s extraordinary that the Minister has already spent $374,000 on Project 300 but cannot make any distinction between the disabled and people who have a health condition. For all we know they did not help any disabled people.

“For employment to be meaningful and sustainable, disabled people need specialised, ongoing support,” says Poto Williams.
