Matawananga Kapa Haka event
03.10.2008
Tainui MP Nanaia Mahuta said Te Waananga o Aotearoa's Matawananga kapa haka event which starts today at the Apakura Campus in Te Awamutu, is a great way for whanaau to gather and celebrate.
"Te Waananga o Aotearoa is one of New Zealand's largest tertiary education providers in the country and has provided a fantastic and diverse environment, with programmes including Maori performing arts and te reo Maori," Nanaia Mahuta said.
"One of its strengths is that it is guided by Maori principles and values, and it offers students the opportunity to learn a broad range of tertiary programmes in a unique Maori learning environment.
"The Labour-led government believes education is the key to a future full of potential and I'm proud the Labour-led government has a strong relationship with the Waananga around the country.
"The Waananga has put strong emphasis on academic excellence and retaining their students to complete their chosen academic programme. Te Waananga o Aotearoa has been a key contributor to lifting Maori tertiary education participation and I commend them for their efforts.
Te Waananga o Aotearoa operates in more than 80 locations nationwide, and the Te Awamutu campus is expecting more than 2000 visitors for the event.
"Matawananga is the only opportunity for Waananga around the country to get together and celebrate as a whaanau, so this is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate culture and the progress Waananga from around Aotearoa/New Zealand have made."
