Local MP to locals: have your say on Aotea Square
10.07.2008
Judith Tizard, MP for Auckland Central, today encouraged city residents to make a submission on the $25 million plan to revitalise Aotea Square in the heart of Auckland's CBD.
"It is absolutely vital that public spaces and facilities meet the needs of CBD residents and workers so that they can participate fully in their community," said Judith Tizard.
"Aucklanders are looking to the City Council to deliver top class public spaces and the revitalisation of Aotea Square is an important part of this.
"As more people move into the city it is increasingly important that we deliver the public places needed so that we can all celebrate and participate in our community.
"This project is a massive investment of public money so we must make sure it delivers what we need.
"The City Council needs to consult the community widely and submissions from locals are an important part of this process.
"Having top class facilities that enable us to host big events, especially those that are not centred around alcohol, mean that families will want to come into the city to have fun and be safe.
"Kids living in the city need places where they can ride bikes and everyone in the CBD needs places where they can exercise and get together.
"Council also needs to consider how Aotea Square will work with the network of other public spaces.
"So get online, take a look at the proposals and have your say before its too late," she said.
Public consultation started today and finishes on 1 August 2008.
