Delivering more than just tax cuts

  • $160 million over the next four years will help an estimated 5000 more people receive elective surgery each year, and increase access to diagnostics, specialist assessments and outpatient procedures for 12,000 more patients through their GPs.

  • Budget 2008 brings more student allowances, more scholarships and more loan support to students.

  • KiwiSaver is helping New Zealanders to be financially secure in their retirement. Each Kiwisaver receives a $1,000 kickstart to their savings, up to $1,040 each year in tax credits, and employers are required to add contributions as well, starting at 1% of your gross salary or wage this year, rising to 4% in 2011.

  • Funding is in the budget to accelerate the widespread deployment of cheaper and faster broadband for all consumers. This will bring substantial economic gains that will transform New Zealand“s economy and society.

  • Four and five year olds are being offered free and voluntary B4 School checks to identify any health, behavioural, social, or developmental concerns which could affect their ability to learn, for example a hearing problem or communication difficulty.

  • Budget 2008 funds more than 750 new teachers so that new entrant class size will be reduced to one teacher per 15 students.
