National’s spin machine has tied itself up in knots with claims it has taken the axe to the core public service, Labour’s State Services spokesperson Kris Faafoi said today.
“The truth is, National’s claim that it is moving resources from the back office to the front line is a crock,” Kris Faafoi said.
“National says the supposed reduction of core public services is due to relentless cost cutting. The truth is it is because close to 700 staff were moved from the Ministry of Social Development to Work and Income as part of a restructure.
“National’s myth that it has capped growth in the public sector is shot down by the State Services Commission finding in its Human Capability Report that the public service workforce increased by 780 FTEs in the year to June 2014.
“The truth is that we’ve got more managers and fewer contact centre workers answering calls from the public than we did 5 years ago.
“The report also forecasts that 18 of 30 Government departments or agencies intend to increase their staffing levels in the next year.
“Beyond National’s spin, the reality is this Government is increasingly politicising our public sector. But what would you expect from a Government that uses taxpayer money to run smear campaigns from the 9th floor?” says Kris Faafoi.
