We’re committed to improving the wellbeing of all New Zealanders, and housing is a key piece of that puzzle. Since coming into Government, we’ve worked hard to turn around New Zealand’s housing crisis and to ensure more people have access to affordable, healthy, and secure homes.

We believe everyone should be free to be themselves – and today, we’ve taken the next step to make this a reality for more New Zealanders. We've just passed legislation to protect the rights of our LGBTQIA+ whānau, by prohibiting harmful conversion practices.

As Parliament resumes for 2022, we checked in with some members of our Labour team on their priorities for the year ahead.

New Zealand enters a third challenging year confronting the global pandemic, better prepared than many other countries to chart a path through the disruption and beyond into the recovery.

You might have heard that New Zealand’s unemployment rate is down to 3.2% – and that record numbers of Kiwis have been moving off the benefit and into work. We’re proud that our efforts to strengthen the job market, upskill our workforce, and support local businesses are paying off as we continue with our COVID recovery.

Despite the ups and downs caused by COVID-19, this time of year will always be special. A time where we commemorate the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. My great-great-great-great-grandfather Whetoi Pomare was one to have etched his name on Te Tiriti.

Throughout our COVID response, we’ve worked hard to protect lives and livelihoods. As we face Omicron, keeping people safe remains our goal. Since this new variant emerged overseas, we’ve been preparing for its arrival in New Zealand and, now that it’s here, we’ve got a plan to see us through. As with the rest of our COVID response, it’ll take a team effort.

We’re making sure Auckland has the infrastructure it needs for the future, so Aucklanders can get around safely and efficiently as our biggest city grows. The new, linked-up transport system we’re building will include partially tunnelled light rail between the CBD and the airport, as well as another Waitematā Harbour crossing.
