Figures show National is failing our farmers

New statistics released today showing a decline in dairy livestock as well as lower sheep, beef and deer numbers proves National is failing the agricultural sector, says Labour’s Primary Industries spokesperson Damien O’Connor.

“The Government’s goal of export double will never be achieved in such a declining environment.

“This reality is backed up by the annual trade deficit, which is the largest in seven years.

This shows no real progress has been made across the agricultural sector or increasing the value of our exports.

“Farmers who have traditionally supported National will be reassessing their loyalty given these new statistics and declining profitability shown in the 2015 agricultural production survey released today.

“The Government needs to take action to ensure rural communities can get through these difficult times. The Government is far too complacent and is out of touch with the needs of our regions,” says Damien O’Connor.
