Steven Joyce must rule out a second revision of the Government’s export target in six months and stop trying to massage statistics when he fails to meet his goals, says Labour’s Economic Development spokesperson David Clark.
“National set a target of raising exports 40 per cent of GDP at the beginning of the Government but has gone backwards to below 30 per cent. This is a serious failure.
“Instead of admitting he is getting it wrong, Mr Joyce is now softening the ground to lower the target to around 36 per cent by claiming that Statistics New Zealand has measured exports incorrectly.
“This comes after a November change of measurement, from the value of exports to volume to try to make their progress look more impressive.
“It’s lies, damned lies and Statistics NZ.
“No one is impressed by this statistical chicanery, least of all export businesses that are doing their best but getting little support from the Government.
“Steven Joyce is constantly shuffling the pack to try to find the card he wants. He is looking more and more like a faded magician,” says David Clark.
