Minister blocks Maori development

The Minister of Maori Development needs to stop blocking Maori progress and allow a more robust legal approach to land reforms, says Labour’s Ikaroa Rāwhiti MP Meka Whaitiri.

“The Minister of Maori Development on behalf of the Crown has moved to block the Maori Land Court Judges Submission on Wai 2478 over the repeal of the Te Ture Whenua Maori Bill.”

“As we honour the anniversary of the great Maori land march to Parliament, we have a Minister of Maori Development playing games with our whenua.

“It is absolutely outrageous that the views of Maori Land Court judges are being precluded from the major land reforms.

“The Minister needs to remember the words of Dame Whina Cooper and assure Maori that ‘not one more acre’ will be sold but that’s not looking likely under his secret reforms.

“Ignoring the views of the judges and not seeking the expert advice of the Law Commission is arrogant and shows the Maori Party is operating in a vacuum, “ says Meka Whaitiri.
